Sweden (Next Media) - A Swedish company has invented an inflatable bicycle helmet that is concealed inside a large collar worn around the neck.

The Hövding contains an airbag that inflates to form a soft, protective shell around a cyclist’s head and neck. According to the company, the airbag is made from ultra-strong nylon fabric that doesn’t easily rip, and inflates in a fraction of a second. Abnormal movements made by a cyclist are detected by sensors within the device, which trigger the airbag to inflate.

The outer shell of the collar can also be changed to match a person’s outfit.

The design of the Hövding was a response to a law introduced in Sweden requiring cyclists aged 15 and under to wear bicycle helmets. There has been debate over whether the law should be extended to adults as well.
