Germany-Supercomputer/Awarding -- 2013 supercomputing conference crowns China's Tianhe-2
China Central Television (CCTV) - Chinese Tianhe-2, also called the Milky Way-2, was ranked No. 1 among the world's top 500 supercomputers with a 33.86 petalop/s Linpack performance, at the International Supercomputing Conference, in Leipzig, Germany Monday.
Tianhe-2 is developed by China's National University of Defense Technology.The test result of Tianhe-2 was 33.86 petaflop/s on the Linpack benchmark, and its peak level theoretically is 54.9 petaflop/s, according to reports.
Titan, the supercomputer of America took the second place, with a 17.59 petalop/s Linpack performance.
The crown of world's fastest computer has been shifted among hands of the US,China, and Japan. The former generation, Tianhe-1 claimed the top spot of the list in 2010, the second place in 2011, and now Tianhe-2 took the crown this year.
Li Nan, the deputy head of the Tianhe-2 Project said there is also a significant progress in its computing capability.
"Tianhe-2 is capable of dealing with some computing tasks that Tianhe-1 could not fulfill. Take the simulation of climate for example, Tianhe-1 could only simulate the climate change in the 2,000 years ahead due to its computing limits. We've broughtTianhe-2 to another magnitude, as in that it is capable of simulating the climate change theoretically for the next 20,000 years," said Li Nan.
