An image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope has been released showing dust and stars being ripped from a galaxy as it moves through a hot galaxy cluster.
IN SPACE (AUGUST 2009) (NASA/ESA/MOVETWO - A recently released image from a space telescope shows a galaxy being ripped apart in space.
The Hubble Space Telescope took the picture in 2009 of galaxy ESO 137-001 trailing stars and dust as it moved through a cluster of galaxies.The effect is a result of the heat of the galaxy cluster, called the Norma Cluster. The process is called ram pressure stripping.
The image was taken of the Great Attractor, a region of space around 200 million light years from Earth.
It takes scientists years to study the hugely complex images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.
The Hubble Space Telescope was launched into space in 1990 and has been taking detailed images of space ever since.
