China-Cross-sea Bridge -- Technological progress seen in construction of HK-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge
China Central Television (CCTV) - The first two prefabricated reinforced concrete pipes for the world's longest undersea expressway tunnel linking China's southern economic hub of Guangdong Province to Hong Kong and Macao were ready for installation on Friday.
And the world's largest underwater roadbed laying machine, developed and built byChina, also arrived at the construction site.The pipes were prefabricated in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province.
This laying machine, "Jinping NO.1", is 88.1 meters long and 46 meters wide with a dead load of over 4,000 tons and operation depth of 50 meters. Its four autolift pillars can extent to 90 meters. Its GPS decides the location and depth automatically, while the machine dumps gravels and levels and presses the roadbed. It can lay 1,200 square meters of roadbed in one go. This is tailor-made for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao tunnel.
The two prefabricated tunnel pipes are each 112.5 meters long and weigh 50,000 tons and each with two big holes for a three-lane highway and two small ones for emergency escapes and communications systems.
The tunnel needs a total of 33 such pipes, and the remaining 31 will be 180 meters long and weigh 80,000 tons each.
Starting from the Lantau Island in Hong Kong, the Y-shaped Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge will have a total length of almost 50 km, of which about 35 km will be built over the sea, making it the longest cross-sea bridge in the world. It will be built according to the six-lane expressway standard with a speed limit of 100 km per hour.
