International air traffic control operator NATS uses data taken from over 30,000 flights to create a spectacular animation of the earth illuminated by aircraft.
INTERNET (MARCH, 06, 2014) (NATS) - An animation compilation of flight data from across Europe by international air traffic control operator NATS, shows the choreographed movements of flights above the world's busiest airspace. The data visualisation, which shows the complex infrastructure of flight paths across the continent, is sourced from a combination of information from radar data from June 21, 2013, and European flight plans from July 28, 2013 . There is an average of 30,000 flights across European airspace every day in July.
These flights cover a combined distance of 25 million nautical miles. The video features two airports in the United Kingdom, London Heathrow, the busiest international airport inEurope, and London Gatwick, the busiest airport with only one runway in the world. On June 21, 2013 (the first date that information used to create the animation came from) 5,675 airplanes departed or arrived from UK airports.
London Gatwick and London Heathrow accounted for 2,295 of these flights.The combined result of this data is a stunning visual representation of the packed airspace above the continent at the height of Summer.
