If networking terms puzzle you, this should hopefully
explain some of the main ones.
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line or ADSL, is the most
popular form of internet connection in the UK
IP Transit - internet connectivity provided to an
individual or business.
Atom - similar to RSS, but a newer technology with morefacilities. It is still being developed but is becoming morecommon place. RSS powers this technology.Bandwidth - the amount of information you can send through aconnection. Bandwidth is generally measured in megabits persecond. Blog - an online journal used by an individual or companyto write about their life or services. Often updated atleast once a week and usually almost daily and is orderedchronologically in order.Broadband refers to a connection which has more bandwidththan a modem, and tends to be a very generic term with nospecific speed committed to it, but will always mean aconnection to the internet rather than LAN connection.
Co-location- where an ISP hosted an individual or companies
server or hardware on their behalf.
DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol distributes IP
addresses dynamically to clients on a network.
DNS - domain name system is used to translate domain names
into IP address, with a DNS server providing the translation
service.
Domain name - all websites have a unique domain name.
Domain names have three sections to them- in the middle a
dot, separating the name, and at the end a tld or domain
ending such as .com.
Ethernet - a common way of networking computers on a LAN,
there are multiple standards and speeds available.
Firewall - can be either hardware or software based to
prevent access to another network for security reasons.
FTP or File Transfer Protocol is a method used to transfer
files to and from the internet.
A host is a computer or client on a network that provides
services to other computers or clients on the same network.
HTTP - HyperText Transfer Protocol is used for moving
hypertext files around the internet. HTTP is best known for
loading websites.
IMAP is gradually replacing POP as the main protocol used by
email clients in communicating with email servers. Using
IMAP, an email client program can not only retrieve email
but can also manipulate content stored on the server,
without having to actually retrieve the messages. IMAP
allows for greater control over email as they can be stored,
emailed etc and shared between groups where POP email can't.
IPv4 Internet Protocol version 4, this is the most widely
used version of the internet protocol. IPv4 has a maximum of
four billion IP Numbers (technically 232) but due to the way
it was designed this is actually less than that due to some
inefficiencies.
IPv6 Is the next generation of IPv4 with over a sextillion
addresses (theoretically 2128) deployment of IPv6 is slow
currently but will get great when more and more devices
cover it.
LAN - local area network, commonly used in small
organisations.
A network is quite simply when two computers are connected.
Where can you find these services? An transit company would
be able to cater for most of the services above.
